Tips for customization
No printer - no problem!
Customize your UniKeep binder with cut paper or "found objects" like maps, wrapping paper, or souvenir posters. Use the entire page from a newspaper instead of just a clipping for scrapbook covers. UniKeep cover overlays are archival and won't stick, so your memories are as safe on the outside as they are inside the binder.
Art supply stores and scrapbooking centers are great resources for large sheets of colorful or themed paper. Marbleized, textured, or illustrated - there's something for every project.
Children (and adults) can use pages from coloring books to personalized their covers.
Create a collage by gluing or taping photos, post cards and other items to the base cover sheet. It's a great effect, especially for scrapbooks or memory albums. Anything goes - fabric, glitter, paper, ticket stubs. The list is endless.
If you create your cover on your own computer, but don't have a printer, you can take the file to a copy center or service bureau. Just save the finished cover to a disc or email the file for fast, high quality output. Remember to include any linked images or fonts if necessary.
Big results from a small printer
Print PDF files and glue or tape photos and other images onto the printed sheet. The collage effect works great with souvenir maps, sentimental swatches of wrapping paper or fabric, etc.
Black-only printers often work well on colored or textured paper. Visit an artist supply or scrapbook store to find unique sheets of paper to use with our without your printer.
Print as large as possible, even if it’s only letter size, and glue the print onto art paper, wrapping paper, an unfolded map, or fabric cut to size. Get a custom, professional, and unique result, regardless of print limitations.
Hand color black and white lasers prints. You don’t have to be an artist to add punch to laser prints with a few judicious sweeps of color from pencils, markers, paints, etc.
Finding and using photos and digital images
Almost anything can be scanned…vintage photos, hand drawn keepsakes, even many three-dimensional items. Great for scrapbooks covers when you are using the original document inside.
Don’t have a scanner? If you have a document that you want to use in your custom cover file, try taking a digital photo of it. Just remember to position the lens directly above or in front of the document or photo. Don’t snap the shot from an angle or your image will be distorted.
If you don’t have a digital camera, you can still get digital photos. Many photo developers can digitize your photos when you have your film developed. They can either make a CD (your next rolls of film can be added to the same disc) or put your photos on a secure web site for you to download. You can also have your photos or other artwork scanned and digitized at many photo stores and service bureaus.
No camera, no scanner? Try faxing the document to yourself. If your computer has a fax modem, chances are good that it saves incoming faxes in a file format that can be recognized as a picture and inserted into your cover file.
Clip art comes with most software programs and more is usually available on the software's web site. Microsoft Word has a large, easy to use library on the web site. Check your software documentation.
Downloads from public domain web sites – be careful – unauthorized use of published material may constitute copyright infringement. Look for sites with free downloads. Other good sources of images for use are photos that are posted as "wallpaper" or "desktop pictures". These are usually understood to be authorized for personal use and are large enough to print well.
Stickers, markers, and collage materials can add color to black and white prints.
