Decorate any table with festive placemats that can be as creative and as versatile as you (or your guests) can imagine. Use EnvyPak™ clear poly envelopes and your favorite scrapbook techniques to create layouts for virtually any theme. The placemats can be as elegant or as colorful as you like because virtually anything can be included.
Supplies:
- EnvyPak™ Scrapbook or Tabloid Archival envelopes from www.unikeep.com
- Photos
- Stickers
- Permanent markers
- Scraps and embellishments according to theme
- Tape, glue, glue dots and/or other adhesives
Instructions:
Constructing the placemats can be as simple or as complex as you like, depending on your theme and your design.
- Use one EnvyPak envelope for each placemat.
- Use one EnvyPak envelope for each placemat.
- Divide or select your embellishments and decorations.
- Construct according to you layout.
- Seal each envelope when all of the elements are in place.
Before you begin:
Decide on the theme and the general design concept. These become “design rules” that will help define the project.
- What is the theme?
- What are your key colors?
- Will you construct all of the placemats to match closely or will each of your guests construct their own?
- Will you ask your guests to supply some of the materials?

Look who’s sitting in MY chair. More fun than reading a name, let a photo of each guest show them where to sit.
This snowflake design uses purchased foam shapes embellished with glitter glue and permanent markers, along with photos and a large snowflake cut from tissue paper. Sprinkle in a little glitter and…let it snow!
Use a template like the one here to ensure that your set of placemats matches in general layout. Get this template and others at www.unikeep.com/scrapbook.

Maximize the design concept. Remember that you will want your placemats to lie flat on the table, but the crystal clear envelopes will allow you to incorporate texture, loose items, and dimensional pieces into the layouts for maximum visual interest. The clear poly will wipe clean, so the composition will be preserved. Because the envelopes will be sealed at the top, you can consider using glitter, sand, or other small loose items that will add motion, too.

Collect the photos and materials you want to use. If you are using photos to identify place settings at the table, you will need to collect images of your guests. It is helpful to have more than one photo available for each, so that you can use the one that best fits your layout and color palette. If you will be asking your guests to supply some of the materials, you may want to be very specific about what they will need, and provide back up materials in case your guests forget.
Select a common element to tie the designs together visually. This can be done by coordinating the colors or by using a specified dominant design for photo cutouts, etc. For some themes, you may choose to make every placemat nearly identical. For more casual themes, like our family dinner, you may allow for more variety and personal creativity, so it will be important for everyone to use one or two consistent elements like coordinated colors or a repeating dominant shape.
Make a template or prototype. If you are constructing all of your placemats yourself, you may want to sketch out a template that will help you place the elements more precisely in each placemat. If your guests will be making their own, you may want to complete one or two in advance for your guests to use as a guide.
Variations:
Memory maker. Instead of one more game at the next bridal or baby shower, ask each attendee to bring tips, photos, recipes, or personal stories to share. Be sure to have plenty of additional embellishments, pens, and cardstock available so each attendee can create a memorable work of art. When the entire collection will be a treasured and personal gift from the entire group.
Graduation buffet. Use photos and memorabilia from throughout the graduate’s academic career including newspaper clippings, report cards, medals, art projects, etc.
Card shower. Let recipients shower the guest of honor with cards, notes and mementoes instead of gifts. Each guest can bring a prepared greeting to include and you can have additional embellishments for decoration. At the end of the party, the guest keeps the placemats and the re-sealable adhesive makes it easy to review the contents. Works well with cash gifts and gift cards, too. |

Share the fun! Kids and adults alike enjoy making these creative party decorations. Let your guests create their own, or use the project as an organized ice breaker.

The clear EnvyPak envelopes allow for a more random or free-form layout. This leaf design works especially well for a casual fall theme on a glass table.
